- Introduction & Background
The German truck Opel Blitz was actively used by the Wehrmacht during World War II. There are several generations of this famous truck, all varying in design and construction. Different versions of the car were produced from 1930 to 1975.
The Opel Blitz truck is recognized as the best three-ton truck of the Wehrmacht. At the same time, it was the only truck produced throughout the war until Germany's defeat. Produced at the Opel car plant in Brandenburg, the truck was specially built for this purpose and was "a model of state socialist enterprise". Daimler-Benz has been involved in the production of this truck since 1944 (under the brand name Mercedes-Benz L701).
The Opel Blitz is rightly considered one of the best and most popular German trucks. Its design is standard while being reliable and relatively simple. On the basis of this truck, a large number of various special vehicles were manufactured. In addition, other modifications were produced, equipped with engines of different capacities. An all-wheel drive version of this car is also produced. To save scarce metal at the end of the war, the Germans began producing trucks with wooden replica cabs。
