The battleship Yamato (Japanese: やまと, English: Yamato, Chinese: 大和号战舰) was the lead ship of the Yamato-class battleships built by the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. As the largest battleship in human history, it was once hailed as the "World's Number One Battleship" and the "Savior of the Japanese Empire."
On April 7, 1945, during the Battle of Okinawa, the Yamato was sunk by U.S. aircraft approximately 50 nautical miles southwest of Kyushu, Japan, becoming a sacrificial symbol of the Japanese militaristic "special attack" spirit. The sinking of the Yamato also marked the definitive end of the era of battleship supremacy.
